Solar Decathlon on the National Mall in DC Oct. 9-18 Features Net-Metering ContestWith a first-ever contest to evaluate power generation capability, the 2009 version of the popular Solar Decathlon will feature 20 teams of colleges and universities self-designing, building and operating homes constructed on the National Mall amid the Smithsonian Institution museums October 9-18. There will be 10 separate contests to evaluate the teams skills in architecture, engineering and communications. The homes must produce enough electricity and hot water from solar panels to perform all the normal functions of a home, including lights, cooking, clothes- and dish-washing, home appliances and a comfortable room temperature. The teams (see list below) have been busy for almost two years preparing for the event, which typically draws thousands of visitors each of the days the homes are open for public tours. This year the dates for the public tours are Friday, October 9 through Tuesday, October 13 and Thursday, October 15 through Sunday, October 18.
